Outdoor LED brightness explained: nits, contrast and content for DOOH screens in direct sunlight
Sunlight is the enemy of every outdoor LED display. Why 5,000–10,000 nits matter, how contrast beats raw brightness, and how to design DOOH content that stays legible at noon.
Ask what makes an outdoor LED display succeed and most people answer resolution. It is not. The specification that wins the fight against daylight is brightness measured in nits, the contrast that keeps dark content dark under a bright sky, and the way the content itself is graded for the street. Daylight is 100,000 lux
A bright interior is around 500 lux; an overcast day outdoors is 10,000; direct sunlight on a façade exceeds 100,000. An indoor display at 1,000 nits simply vanishes in that light. Serious outdoor DOOH surfaces run 5,000 to 10,000 nits, and the difference between the two is the difference between legible at noon and legible at dusk. A south-facing screen with the sun behind the viewer needs the top of that range; a north-facing screen under a canopy can live at the bottom.
How many nits does an outdoor LED screen need?

A 7,000-nit display with a shiny, grey surface reads worse at noon than a 5,000-nit display with deep blacks. When comparing outdoor LED products, ask for the contrast ratio measured in sunlight, not only the peak brightness on the datasheet.

Grading DOOH content for the street
- 01Favour high-contrast compositions: light type on dark fields or the reverse, never mid-tones on mid-tones.
- 02Avoid fine detail below 3% of screen height; at 30 m it disappears.
- 03Use motion sparingly and slowly: passing viewers see a frame, not a film.
- 04Keep one message per frame and hold each frame for at least six seconds.
- 05Schedule brightness: full output at noon, 30–40% after dark to protect neighbours, comply with local light regulations and extend LED lifespan.
The engineering behind high-brightness LED
High brightness generates heat. Outdoor cabinets need sealed IP65 construction front and rear, efficient thermal paths from the LED board to the cabinet skin, and drivers rated for continuous duty between −20 and +50 °C. Energy-efficient LED platforms lower running cost — on a 100 m² façade, a 16% efficiency gain is measured in thousands of euros a year. Look for front-serviceable modules on façades where rear access is impossible, and for cabinets that curve for architectural corners.
Pixel pitch for outdoor displays

An outdoor screen should never run at one brightness all day. A light sensor on the processor adjusts output continuously, while a schedule caps night-time brightness. This protects viewers, satisfies planning authorities and, because LED ageing accelerates with drive current and heat, keeps the wall uniform for years longer.
