COB vs SMD LED: what changes below 1 mm pixel pitch with chip-on-board and flip-chip LED

Fine-pitch LED under one millimetre has moved from a showpiece to a standard specification for control rooms, boardrooms and broadcast sets. What makes it possible is a change in the LED package itself: chip-on-board (COB) and flip-chip construction replace the surface-mount device (SMD) package that built the industry. This guide explains the difference between COB and SMD LED, what flip-chip adds, the gains in contrast, durability and uniformity, and where each technology is the right choice.

SMD LED reaches its limit

A surface-mount LED is a tiny plastic package with red, green and blue chips inside, soldered to the PCB thousands at a time. Below about 1.2 mm pitch the packages sit so close that the plastic walls, not the light, dominate the surface — and each package is a raised point that a finger, a chair or a cleaning cloth can knock off. Mini-LED SMD packages push this to 0.9 mm, but the surface remains a grid of separate parts.

COB: chips mounted on the board

Chip-on-board mounts the bare LED chips directly onto the PCB and seals the whole module under one continuous resin layer. The surface becomes a plane: no gaps, nothing to knock off, deeper blacks from the dark resin, a wider viewing angle because there are no package walls, and a module that can be wiped clean. COB modules also spread heat across the board rather than concentrating it in each package.

Flip-chip: fewer wires, more light

Conventional LED chips bond to the board with fine gold wires. Flip-chip LEDs turn the chip face-down and bond it directly, which frees space, removes a common failure point and improves the thermal path. Combined with COB, flip-chip is how 0.6 to 0.9 mm displays reach 600 to 1,000 nits with uniform colour and long life. Flip-chip COB is now the reference construction for micro-LED-class displays.

Under a millimetre, the screen has to feel like a surface, not a grid.

COB vs SMD: what you gain

  1. 01Impact resistance: a sealed surface survives fingers, furniture and cleaning; SMD packages chip.
  2. 02Contrast: black resin and no package walls give deeper blacks in lit rooms.
  3. 03Uniformity: no colour shift at package edges and a wider, more even viewing angle.
  4. 04Heat: a better thermal path means less brightness drift and colour ageing over years.
  5. 05Moisture and dust: the resin seal protects the chips in humid or dusty rooms.

What you give up

COB modules cost more per square metre, and a failed chip cannot be replaced individually — the module is swapped. Early COB had visible resin texture and a slightly warmer surface; current flip-chip COB has closed that gap. Colour calibration is done per module at the factory and should be verified on site.

Where COB fine pitch fits

Control rooms, boardrooms, broadcast sets, trading floors and any wall viewed from under three metres, especially where text and data dominate. For lobbies, retail and stages at 1.5 mm and above, SMD remains the better value; the viewing distance hides the package structure and the budget goes further.

What is the difference between COB and SMD LED?

SMD uses individually packaged LEDs soldered to the board; COB mounts bare chips directly on the board under one sealed resin layer, giving a smooth, durable, higher-contrast surface at fine pitches.

Is COB LED better than SMD?

Below about 1.2 mm pitch COB is better for durability, contrast and uniformity. At 1.5 mm and above SMD offers better value with no visible downside at normal viewing distances.
